Main tasks attributed in the project

RWTH Aachen University has been a major player during the initialisation and preparation phase of ROCKET. It has contributed substantial ideas and concepts investigated in ROCKET. Since RWTH's expertise lies in the area of system architecture and protocol design as well as performance analysis it will be work package leader of WP5 "Efficient and Reconfigurable MAC". Furthermore it will be a leading character in WP2 "Smart Spectrum Usage". RWTH will actively participate, contribute and push forward these work packages so that ROCKET becomes an outstanding success. Furthermore RWTH will disseminate FIREWORKS results by contributing to standardisation bodies, publishing journal and conference papers and by enriching education and industry oriented research.

Expertise

RWTH owns many technical achievements that make them appropriate to the tasks attributed in ROCKET. According to Staff of the IST FP6 of EU the ranking by amount of funding granted to universities/research centres in Europe in Broadband Wireless and Services strategic objective shows RWTH Aachen in position 4, owing to activities by ComNets. Layer-2-Relay Enhanced Cells (REC) have been introduced by ComNets for capacity increase, range extension and higher spectrum efficiency of mobile broadband systems. Adaptive protocol stacks for scalable air-interfaces is a ComNets invention. The algorithms for spectrum estimation methodology applied by ITU-R WP8F to estimate the spectrum required for Beyond 3G systems in WRC 2007 is originating from ComNets. Game theory has been introduced in radio systems co-existence research by ComNets. A Mesh protocol developed by ComNets is considered for IEEE 802 systems.
